23 April 2026 | Agensi Nuklear Malaysia
The Association of Construction Project Managers Malaysia (ACPM), through an invitation by IPMA Malaysia, participated in an educational visit to Agensi Nuklear Malaysia (ANM) on 23 April 2026.
The visit aimed to enhance awareness and appreciation of nuclear technology among project management professionals, while providing participants with first-hand exposure to the operations of a specialised research facility.
About Agensi Nuklear Malaysia
Established in 1982, Agensi Nuklear Malaysia is the leading national institution responsible for research and development in nuclear science and technology.
Initially, nuclear energy was explored as a potential energy source for the country. However, following Malaysia’s shift towards petroleum-based energy resources, the nuclear reactor has since been utilised primarily for research, training and educational purposes.
Technical Briefing Highlights
Participants were given a comprehensive briefing on the reactor facility and its operations.
The reactor operates using approximately 112 uranium fuel elements (fuel rods) as its primary energy source. These uranium elements are designed with a long operational lifespan of approximately 60–70 years.
Having been in operation for about 40 years, the reactor is expected to remain functional for another 20–30 years, subject to proper maintenance and regulatory compliance.
The session provided valuable insights into reactor design fundamentals and operational sustainability, particularly from an engineering and asset lifecycle perspective.
Safety, Security & Safeguards
A key objective of ANM is to educate the public and address misconceptions surrounding nuclear technology. The agency emphasises that nuclear applications are safe when properly managed.
Participants were introduced to ANM’s 3S Principle:
Safety – Ensuring operational and environmental safety
Security – Protecting nuclear materials and facilities
Safeguards – Compliance with international nuclear regulations
The briefing provided participants with a greater appreciation of the importance of systematic safety management and regulatory compliance within a highly specialised technical environment.
Inside the Research Reactor Facility
As part of the educational visit, delegates were given exclusive access to the:
Research reactor facility
Reactor control room
The site visit provided participants with first-hand exposure to the facility and a better understanding of the operational environment surrounding nuclear research and technology.
Valuable Insights for Project Management Professionals
The visit provided ACPM delegates with valuable exposure to nuclear technology applications, particularly in the areas of risk management, safety systems and long-term asset sustainability.
It also reinforced the importance of public communication and stakeholder confidence when dealing with technically complex infrastructure.
Through educational and industry engagements such as this, ACPM continues to broaden the exposure of project management professionals to different technologies, operating environments and approaches relevant to the management of complex projects.
ACPM extends its appreciation to IPMA Malaysia for the invitation and to Agensi Nuklear Malaysia for the valuable knowledge and experience shared throughout the visit.
